Our Impact
WASTE TO CHARCOAL
The kitchen waste lying in our bins or landfills can help save trees that are being cut down for charcoal. The Uganda National Forest Authority estimates in 2009 put the round wood used for charcoal production, at nearly 7 million tonnes or 11 million cubic metres annually in Uganda. At EASEUganda we carbonise kitchen waste and turn it into eco charcoal. Since the start of the project, we have recycled 43 tonnes of biodegradable waste and helped reduce the number of trees being cut down for charcoal.
WASTE TO INCOME
In order for community based waste management to be a success, it must address more than the need for improved environmental management. That is why we provide an income generation opportunity to the community. We motivate women to participate in keeping the environment clean and safe, by buying their kitchen waste. This additional income helps meet critical needs like food. We have so far provided additional income to 62 families.
SAVING TREES STOVE BY STOVE
You will hear many impoverished families say they missed a meal because they couldn’t afford cooking fuel. On average, households use 2000 shillings daily on charcoal to cook their food. This is strenuous on the meagre income of a family that is already struggling to put food on the table daily. Through our stove by stove program, we are able to help impoverished families reduce their daily income expenditure by using less charcoal for cooking. The energy saving stove saves 25%-50% of charcoal used daily. With the help of our friends generosity, we have been able to provide 15 families with energy saving stoves.
